Finding a good car
insurance quote
Most, in
our view misguidedly, have a knee-jerk response on this issue. It's a
no-brainer, they will tell you, use a price comparison site. While it
can be seen as a 'no-brainer' first choice, we would argue that applies
only if you mean by 'no-brainer' that you have not engaged your brain
to identify an altogether more approapriate route to cover.
This is quite an assertion, some may say. Why dismiss the UK's
favourite way to get a cheap car insurance quote? People routinely save
hundreds on their renewal quotes by this means. And, it's really easy
when you just have to fill in one form for hundreds of prices.
All of which is correct. The problem is that people will often
disregard the cover in favour of saving money. Price comparison sites
undoubtedly live up to their name very well - they're a great way to
compare prices - but they vary considerably in relation to how helpful
they are when you start trying to figure out exactly what sort of cover
is associated with each of the listed policies.
That people so readily sujugate getting the right policy features in
favour of prioritising and realising cost savings is a significant
error in a world where the market is flooded with very basic policies
given people's liking for a budget car insurance quote.
When people buy a TV set or a bottle of wine, they will often use price
as an indication of the likely quality. When they get a car
insurance quote, they often put aside this sensible tenet.
While in the case of car insurance you may get away with such a bad
choice, and you wouldn't with the TV or wine, a bad choice is not
rendered a good choice just because you were lucky enough not to need
to claim.
Thus, your cover is important and you need to scrutinise it properly.
This is not easily done via a price comparison site where policy data
is presented, at best, in very brief form. So, a look at the insurance
company website directly can be wise for adequate detail.
The more that you come at your car insurance quote from the perspective
of what you would need in an accident, the more that it becomes clear
that most, perhaps all, no frills policies are better left on the shelf
and consequently the less valuable a resource a price comparison site
is to you.
If we look at a better alternative - going direct to a leading car
insurance provider for a quote - what are the advantages of doing
this? Well, the key one is to get excellent cover as standard.
You don't have to wade through lots of inferior policies before finding
what you want. The second advantage is that the quote forms for single
direct car insurance providers are quicker to fill in than those of
price comparison sites due to the smaller data set required.
Price concerns need not feature prominently here. Much better that you
buy what you need in terms of the cover and allow the competitive
market to control pricing to within acceptable limits.
